Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
