Growing apprehensions exist over the potential of warfare between East African neighbors, Ethiopia and the Eritrean government, as confrontational language has intensified in recent weeks.

What Has Ethiopian Officials Stated?

Landlocked Ethiopia's requests for entry to the Red Sea through Eritrea has sparked a heated rhetorical conflict.

Ethiopian Prime Minister first openly declared in 2023 that his nation's sea access was an vital issue, statements that Eritrea rejected.

Ties between the both governments have often been tense. After a long-standing struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a 1,350km (840-mile) maritime frontage, legally broke away from Ethiopia in the early 1990s, leaving it cut off from the sea.

In 1998, a military clash started in which numerous people died.

Current Remarks from Ethiopian Government

Abiy and army chief Field Marshal Birhanu Jula have publicly asserted ownership of Eritrea's maritime facility of Assab – approximately 60 kilometers from the frontier - and hinted at the desire to take it by force.

In early September, Abiy said the country's "blunder" of being denied passage to the sea as a due to Eritrea's separation would be "rectified tomorrow".

The Ethiopian envoy to neighboring Kenya, ex-military officer Bacha, said that the port was "Ethiopian property" and would be given back "using武力".

Eritrea's Reaction to the Claims

Amid persistent warnings from Ethiopia, Eritrea's reaction has been restricted to brief comments on X from Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel.

Officials have denied Ethiopian requests for sea access calling it "risky" and a "harmful plan" of "territorial claims" – a strategy of claiming back previous domains.

The information ministry alerted on mid-September that efforts to justify "blatant hostility" would have serious consequences for Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries and is a "boundary that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Military Preparations on the Region

So far, there are no reports of major military movements in the border areas between the neighboring states.

However, in the country, government media has shown graduation ceremonies of many recruits at different defense facilities.

The leader of personnel division of the military, the officer, stated recently in an conversation that the military was in a "reliable position" as "tens of thousands of youths" were joining it, which he said was "a warning to our enemies".

Past Roots of the Tension

For more than half a century from 1890, the territory was ruled by Italian colonisers.

Following the end of Italian rule, it was then controlled by the British administration before evolving into a federated part of Ethiopia.

But in the early 1960s the ruler cancelled this arrangement and the region became fully incorporated into the Ethiopian state.

A three-decade long armed struggle ensued, ending with Ethiopia's defeat in 1991. Autonomy was then approved by the population in a vote in 1993.

Temporarily in the 1990s, there were positive ties between the leadership in Ethiopia's capital and Eritrea's capital, but they fell out over the specific demarcation of their mutual frontier, causing hostilities in 1998.

Although this concluded in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was partially applied, and the two nations remained at in dispute.

This ended in 2018, when Abiy made approaches to Eritrea's leader President Isaias. The both leaders signed a declaration that the war was over – a action that won the Prime Minister the Nobel Peace Prize.

The both administrations were then cooperators in the country's 2020-2022 civil war in the northern region.

Yet relations have subsequently deteriorated again.
